Our Story
Our project began in August 2021 with the aim of helping eight highly valued locally employed colleagues who, for various reasons, found that traditional training through a national application process did not ideally serve their circumstances.
Our vision was to create a bespoke and supportive training pathway within our hospitals that would give them an opportunity to become future consultant colleagues, by joining the GMC Specialist Register through the portfolio route.

“Being involved with LiPA has been a beacon of educational hope in what has seemed like a challenging few years. At it’s centre, is a person focused programme, which appreciates an individual’s previous clinical and non-clinical experience and can therefore focus on their own training needs to complete a CESR application. However, the best part is the people I have had the pleasure of working alongside. This includes a dedicated, forward-thinking faculty and highly motivated, enthusiastic and committed group of doctors on the programme.”

LiPA trainee numbers have now expanded to nearly 30 anaesthetists in training, with a dedicated faculty of 15 consultants across all our training sites. The umbrella of our programme has spread beyond Imperial College Healthcare to include secondments to some renowned hospitals in London, including The Royal Brompton, The Royal Marsden, Hillingdon, Moorfields, The Cleveland Clinic London and The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
The LiPA program has received enthusiastic support from trainees, trainers, and associated Trusts. In 2023, the LiPA program received the Imperial Surgery, Cancer, and Cardiovascular Division’s Education Award for ‘Best Innovation.’
