Our Training
The GMC’s Portfolio pathway (formally known as the CESR route) allows trainees not on a HEE training programme to evidence that they have gained the knowledge, skills and experience of a Consultant Anaesthetist, making them eligible for entry to the Specialist Register.
Historically, the onus was on trainees to set up their own fellowships and collate the evidence needed. The LiPA programme provides structure and stability to this process by creating a bespoke, flexible, 4-year training programme built around an individual’s training needs and professional development. LiPA trainees are well supported during this time by a faculty that are invested in their success.

“From my perspective as a Clinical Director in Anaesthetics, the LiPA programme stands out as a very welcome innovation. It provides workforce stability over a four year cycle, buffers us from the disruption caused by unpredictable fluctuations in trainee numbers and the administrative burden of short-term recruitment.
Beyond its immediate benefits, it ensures the future resilience of our departments- by providing access to a pool of highly talented, motivated, and diverse trainees, we are given the opportunity to mentor and develop our next generation of consultant colleagues.”

To enhance our training programme, we have developed a dedicated members’ section featuring bite-sized educational videos & interviews, curated external educational content, interactive calendars and a digital contemporaneous training record. Developed by our community of trainees, alumni and faculty, these resources span a broad and expanding spectrum of topics. Its aim is to empower LiPA trainees to navigate their training opportunities effectively, understand the RCOA curriculum better, build robust portfolios of evidence and submit high quality, and ultimately successful applications to the GMC.
